For wood mulch, 2–3 inches is a common starting point. Account for existing mulch and keep it away from trunks.A few helpful field notes
How much topsoil do I need?
Calculate soil volume from your area and the depth you want to add. Get cubic yards and whole-bag quantities for a single bed or several areas, then compare delivered bulk against bagged soil.
Bags = round up (area × depth ÷ 12 ÷ bag volume)
Match soil type and depth to your planting plan. Topsoil is not automatically the right filling material for every raised bed or container. Ask the supplier about settling and blend suitability.
Example topsoil quantities
At 4 inches deep, before extra material. Bag volume: 1 cu ft.
| Area (sq ft) | Cubic yards | Whole bags |
|---|---|---|
| 100 | 1.23 | 34 |
| 200 | 2.47 | 67 |
| 500 | 6.17 | 167 |
Volume is displayed to two decimals. Bag counts use the unrounded volume. Bulk purchase increments may increase the quantity ordered.
Before you order
How do I convert volume to bags?
Divide total cubic feet by the bag volume printed on the label, then round up. A 1 cu ft bag covers 3 square feet at 4 inches deep before adding any allowance.
Is bulk always cheaper?
No. Minimum orders, delivery charges, purchase increments and bag discounts can change the total. Enter both quotes above to compare the entire order.
Can I measure in meters?
Yes. Metric mode accepts meters for lengths and centimeters for depth. Switching units converts your measurements and preserves the estimated volume.
What does extra material cover?
The editable allowance increases volume for uneven surfaces and handling losses. The 10% initial value is a planning example; set it to suit your site and supplier.
