Inspect drainage, root-zone moisture and the surface below your pots before choosing when and how to water a small-space container garden.
Check the whole water route
Confirm drainage openings and a safe route for runoff before filling. If a decorative outer pot has no outlet, plan a compatible draining inner pot and a way to empty collected water. Do not block building drains or direct water onto people below.
Observe the root zone
Check moisture in more than one spot without damaging roots. The surface can look dry while the root zone remains wet. Pot material, weather, plant size and establishment affect how quickly conditions change.
Avoid one fixed daily instruction
Water according to the plant and actual conditions rather than prescribing the same amount to every pot. Follow local restrictions. A reservoir or timer does not remove the need to inspect drainage and moisture.
Troubleshoot before adding water
If water pools, runs off immediately or plants wilt, inspect the growing mix, drainage and root-zone conditions. Do not assume every symptom means drought. Pause changes and seek plant-specific guidance if the cause is unclear.
