Check roots, plant condition and container dimensions before repotting, and estimate only the growing mix that the new setup actually needs.
Decide whether repotting is needed
Assess the plant, roots, current container and growing medium. Poor growth can have several causes, so changing pots is not a universal cure. Confirm timing and handling for the specific plant with a reliable local source.
Prepare the destination
Choose a compatible container with drainage and appropriate usable root space. Check its filled weight and the supporting surface. Clean tools and prepare a protected work area, suitable mix and a watering plan.
Estimate the space you will fill
Measure the new container internally. A full empty-volume estimate overstates the new mix when a root ball or retained material occupies part of it. Treat the calculator as a planning bound and subtract a defensible occupied volume rather than ordering blindly.
Label the handoff
Record new pot dimensions, retained root ball, mix type and any care instructions you need to confirm. If a provider does the work, agree who supplies plants and containers, how waste is removed and how establishment will be monitored.
