Compare usable internal volume, root space, drainage and filled weight before choosing a container for your small-space garden project.
Start with mature needs
Check the plant’s mature root-space requirements and intended time in the container. There is no single liters-per-plant rule that fits herbs, shrubs and climbing plants. Also check available light and the plant’s climate suitability.
Measure usable space
Use inside dimensions, actual fill depth and the shape of the filled section. A decorative outer pot may need a draining inner container. Exterior diameter, rim width or a marketing size does not necessarily describe the usable growing volume.
Compare more than volume
Confirm drainage, material, cleaning, weather suitability and stability. Growing mix and water can make a light empty pot heavy. A larger container is not automatically better if it blocks access, overloads a surface or stays unsuitable for the plant.
Record the specification
Add dimensions and any inner-pot requirement to your material list. For tapered pots, record both diameters at the filled section. The calculator estimates mix volume; confirm actual product dimensions and filled-weight guidance with the maker.
