Observe direct light, shade, wind and watering access before choosing balcony plants, containers or a small-space garden layout.

Observe a real day

Record when direct sunlight reaches each proposed pot position in the morning, midday and afternoon. Repeat when seasonal shade changes. Bright reflected light is not the same as direct sun; trees, buildings and balcony roofs can change the pattern.

Choose for the conditions you have

Check the specific plant label or local extension guidance for light needs and mature size. Do not treat every herb or every balcony as interchangeable. Winter hardiness zones describe cold extremes, not hours of sunlight or a planting calendar.

Check the space before buying

Keep doors, drainage outlets and emergency routes clear. Confirm building rules, wind exposure and loaded container limits with the responsible party. A soil-volume calculation does not establish balcony load capacity.

Turn observations into a project

Write the light pattern, usable dimensions, water access and container positions into a simple sketch. Choose one manageable group of containers first. Photograph the space if you choose to contact a provider, without including private documents or neighbors.
